27 – World Mental Health Day
On World Mental Health Day, October 10 the message is simple: “Look after your mental health, Australia.”
As our work generally plays such a big role in our lives, it’s important to reflect on how it impacts our mental well-being and how we can improve the work environment for all.
The Black Dog Institute has shared The Five Ways to Wellbeing, which are a set of evidence-based actions which promote people’s wellbeing. These were developed from research conducted by over 400 experts in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, education, and economics from across the world who reviewed current knowledge on mental health and well-being.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are:
Connect – think about how you interact with those in your life and make efforts to increase the positivity in these relationships. In the workplace, you can establish staff interest groups and organise social activities.
Be active – exercise releases endorphins which can lift your mood and can increase resilience to managing stress. In the workplace try a walking meeting instead of sitting.
Take notice – practice mindfulness to focus on the here and now. In the workplace try changing your work environment during your scheduled breaks.
Keep learning – take on new roles or develop new interests and set goals to challenge yourself. In the workplace, consider your career goals regularly and seek opportunities to develop.
Give – give gifts of time or perform acts of kindness. Enjoy helping others and benefit from the unconditional rewards & connections. In the workplace, give your colleagues genuine compliments about the value they bring to your organisation.
