Aboriginal Identified Homelessness Consultant

Job description

Aboriginal Identified Role - Lived Experience Consultant
Byron Shire Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration

About the Role

We are seeking an Aboriginal Identified Lived Experience Consultant to join the Byron Shire Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration. Your lived experience of homelessness-and the insights and strength that come with it-will help shape more culturally informed and responsive services for Aboriginal people in our community.

You'll work alongside local leaders and service providers to influence strategy, promote understanding, and ensure the voices of Aboriginal people with lived experience of homelessness are heard and respected.

This is a culturally safe and supported opportunity to be part of local systems change. You'll be included as a valued equal member of the Local Leaders Group and will have opportunities to contribute in ways that feel right for you.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Sharing your lived experience (only where comfortable) to challenge myths and improve understanding of homelessness-especially for Aboriginal people.
  • Attending and participating in monthly 90-minute Local Leaders Group meetings.
  • Joining short pre-brief and debrief meetings with the support team.
  • Offering insights and feedback to improve local housing and homelessness services.
  • Collaborating with Byron Shire Council's Backbone Team on project outcomes.
  • Optional: participating in events, training, or media activities.

Who We're Looking For

This is an Aboriginal Identified role. To apply, you must identify as Aboriginal and have personal experience of homelessness (past or current), particularly within Byron Shire.

You'll also be:

  • Comfortable to share your experience in a respectful and strengths-based way
  • Interested in improving services and outcomes for others
  • A good communicator who can work respectfully with a range of people
  • Reliable and open to participating in meetings
  • No formal qualifications are needed-your experience is your expertise

Why Join Us?

  • Your voice will shape local strategies and services
  • Be part of a supportive, respectful, and culturally safe team
  • Flexible time commitment: 2.5-5 hours per month
  • Make a real difference in the lives of Aboriginal people experiencing homelessness

How to Apply

If you're an Aboriginal person who has experienced homelessness and want to help create change, we'd love to hear from you.
